Did you know:

  • Infidelity is not the cause of breakups and divorce.
  • Constant fighting is not the cause of breakups and divorce.
  • Emotional separation (living past each other) is not the cause of breakups and divorce.
  • Disagreements about money, parenting, sex, and in-laws are not the cause of breakups and divorce.

Long before we’re cheating, constantly arguing, blaming each other for debt, ill-behaved children, and lack of intimacy…

Long before we’re hating our in-laws…

Long before all of that, we commit a fatal error…

We stop communicating.

…or worse still?

We come to realize that we’ve never been good at communicating… And it was the passage of time – with all its complexities and hardships – that shone a floodlight on this lack.

Lack of effective communication leads to assumptions…

Assumptions create hurt and frustration (which grow like weeds).

And then, like a weed-ravaged garden, we can no longer see the “wood” for the “weeds”.

These “weeds” (of assumption) become our truth about our partner and about our relationship.

What we look for, we will find. And we will thus find “confirmation” of our assumptions everywhere (even if it’s not really there).

Paranoia, feelings of betrayal and loneliness start to creep in and tell us to expect the worst.

We back ourselves into a corner and end up lashing out at our partner… for something they know nothing about.

By believing the lies that we’ve told ourselves, we may very well be the authors of our own doom… Writing self-fulfilling prophecies and never running them past our partner.

…Because we aren’t communicating.

…Because we aren’t allowing our partner in.

…Because we no longer know how to.

Perhaps we’re not even sure if we want to…

Does this sound familiar..?
